When Scotty was about 2 year I had an occasion to take him with me to a construction company in order to work out some plans on some new enclosures. As usually Scotty was the center of attention. He came into the building and went around to all the employees to see what they were doing. He soon found a hard hat and put it on. The hat came down over his eyes and he was unable to see where he was going but he would not remove the hat. After he had run into several pieces of furniture and wall, he started walking erect with his hands out in front of him feeling for and obstacles that might be in his way. The entire office staff was laughing which only encouraged Scotty.

Onions : In the group of onions
(sulfur compound foods), we include
chives, leeks, shallots, scallions,
turnips, garlic and even cabbage!

From time to time we hear the wildest stories about onions.  Some people say they are a must in a primates diet, others say they are bad for them.   Time for us to set things straight.  Why this confusion?  It’s simple, onions are good for primates but have a bad effect on a primates body when overdosed.   Many things are dangerous when overdosed.  The best example here is vitamin D3.  Vitamin D3 is very important in a primates diet but causes issues when overdosed.  Let’s make a comparison and then you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to include onions in your primates diet. It is 7 am and Benji is upstairs in bed with me…..I change his diaper and  take him downstairs and get him and sammy a mini muffin and take Benji into their bedroom where he and Sammy have their own  sleep cages. Sammy is in her cage and Benji is getting into his, with muffin in hand. I give Sammy her muffin and they will stay in their sleep cages till 9 or 10. I go in the kitchen and check all my email. I turn on the camera so I can see Sammy and Benji in their room….they are already back to sleep.

We hear it so many times, people who want a sweet little baby chimp.

I have to admit, they are so cute when they are just a baby but maybe it is time for a reality check.  If you are not an experienced animal trainer, you will not be able to handle a chimp once he gets older.

Did you know that an adult chimp is up to 10 times stronger then a human being?  Before you even think about buying a chimp as an additional family member, just go to the zoo and check out their arm size.  I have no doubt about the fact that you will try to do everything you can to teach your chimp what is right and wrong.  After all, isn’t that what every parent tries to achieve with their kids? However, kids get injured all the time from fighting or fooling around.  Can you imagine what a chimp can do to you when he is just fooling around?  I mean, it’s not the first time that someone lost an arm or a leg or even his life when interacting with a chimp.  Let’s face it, a chimp is one of the greatest and most intelligent creatures among us … but they can never be considered as pets.

I’ve had Jessica since she was 11 days old. She just had her third birthday March 1. She is wonderful. She has her own bedroom. She also has an indoor-outdoor enclosure that she spends her day in. They are actually two large chain link dog runs, one inside and one outside with a doggie or (monkey) door in the middle. For her birthday, I got her another 6 foot run to attach to her outside cage.
