Reproduction

Females become sexually mature at appr 2.5 year, males at 4 year. In the wild births occur in the wet season (February and April), but in captivity births can occur in any month (however mostly in may – august).

The gestation is about 147 days.

Most of the births take place at night. Labor takes about 88 to 165 minutes. The baby will cling to the back of the mother from birth. The father won’t help in raising the young but other mothers with no young will.

They always give birth of 1 baby.

The weight of the infant is appr 112g for males and 106g for females.

Very soon after brith the baby start sucking.

After 20 days the babies start to take some solid food.

After a period of 5 to 6 months, the infants are completely weaned.

Squirrel monkeys can live 25 years in captivity.
