Reproduction

Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 7 to 8 years.

Females usually begin oestrous cycles at 18 to 22 months of age. Births can occur in any month.

The gestation is varying from 190 – 214 days.

Most of the births take place at night. The afterbirth is eaten by the female. Within a few hours of birth they can vocalize and cling to their mother’s chests.

They usually give birth of 1 baby. Occasionally twins are born.

The weight of the infant is appr 400g. At the age of 6 years adult size is reached.

After 1 month the babies become more co-ordinated.
After 6-8 weeks they can pull themselves upright and they can kneel and sit.
After 8-10 weeks they begin to climb.
After 4 months they can swing with both hands.
After 2-4 months the babies start to take some solid food.
After a period of 1-2 years the infants are completely weaned.

Lar Gibbons can live 30 years in captivity.
