Amongst primate owners, the most commonly known method of diapering is the tail hole method but more and more primate owners are switching over to the tail wrap method. Since I’ve used both methods myself and don’t really have a particular preference, I reached out to other primate owners to find out why they prefer one method over the other. Before we go into more details, I’ve recorded a short video to demonstrate the difference between both methods. After that we’ll talk about diaper covers, different diaper brands, and what monkey parents are doing to prevent diaper rash.

Tail Hole vs Tail Wrap Method
It seems that most people that are using the tail hole method are those that haven’t tried the tail wrap method. Amongst those that have, they feel that the tail hole method allows you to diaper a monkey faster, that it is less visible when wearing a diaper cover or other clothes, and it fits better especially with smaller primates. Those who use the tail wrap method, prefer this method because there is no possible leakage around the tail (which can indeed happen with the tail hole method), it leaves a pouch so the poop doesn’t stick, and the air pocket helps reduce the chances of skin irritation due to wetness. Also, depending on the brand you use, there is no jelly, beads, or stuffing that can fall out of the diaper since you’re not cutting the diaper like you do with the tail hole method.
Which brand of diapers and wipes should you use?
Based on the poll that I did, there doesn’t seem to be a specific brand that truly stood out. Some people that were using the tail hole method seemed to prefer Parents Choice from Walmart because there are no beads that fall out but both Huggies and Pampers were also mentioned several times as the preferred brand in both diapering methods. When using wipes instead of warm water, it is preferred to use wipes that are unscented like Pampers Sensitive or Huggies Sensitive since scented wipes will very often cause diaper rash. To my surprise there were also a few people using cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are actually a great solution for those primate owners that are having problems with monkeys shredding their diapers. It can be dangerous for primates to eat this stuffing since it can cause intestinal blockage so make sure to come up with a solution if you fall within that category. If you’re experiencing this problem with your primate, and you can’t seem to figure out how to stop your monkey from shredding their diaper, a cloth diaper might be the solution for you.
Diaper Covers
While a diaper cover made for monkeys ensures that your primate can’t remove their diaper, it doesn’t stop them from digging into their diaper. If you’re looking for a diaper cover, make sure to check out our monkeys for sale section within our site since there are always ads for people selling diaper covers. One way to help stop your monkey from digging and shredding their diaper is by running a small collar through the loops of the diaper cover. These collars (which are available at pet smart) have a hole in them which allows you to run a small lock through them to ensure that your primate won’t be able to open them up.
Diaper Rash
If your monkey ends up having diaper rash, you could use Triple Paste or Boudreaux’s Butt Paste but it is truly better to just let your monkey run around naked until the diaper rash is cleared up. Most of these products contain Zinc Oxide and while the toxicity level is low, it can cause a danger to your primate if consumed in larger amounts over time.
